How Accountable Are You?

By Colette Morris

To be successful in anything in life you have to be accountable. You have to be answerable to you.  With accountability comes integrity which are closely connected.

Richard Branson in his book ‘Screw it Let’s Do it!’ talks about the responsibility of success being down to your ultimate ‘why’ or goal, and then having the guts to go out there and achieve it.   If you make yourself accountable you command respect, integrity and trust.  All key components on being accountable.

When things go wrong, do you tend to blame others or circumstances around you?  Then being accountable is not high on your list right now.  You have to get over the fact that at times, things are going to not always go your way, but being accountable means taking the flack when things go wrong, it means the buck stops with you, having a no blame culture , being able to look at the situation and working out a way in which you can get around the obstacle or issue with a positive attitude.

Being accountable means being a leader, someone who people look up to, who is in a position to help others without thought or benefit to themselves.  It’s about being responsible for your actions, and not putting blame on others or circumstances.

Putting your personal development to the fore also helps with building up your character and your accountability. Personal development identifies where your strengths and weaknesses are as a leader.  There are so many books, courses, dvd’s out there than can help you grow in your personal development.  There is nothing more important than changing your mindset from where you are now, and developing a mindset of where you want to be.  People around you will notice a difference, they will see that you are on a higher level especially if they are not into personal development themselves.

Below is a short video I put together describing what accountability means to me.  I hope you find this information useful.  Let me know your thoughts and leave me a comment below.
