If you have never been in the position of leading people, or having your own business, it can be pretty daunting. Even those of us who have run a business in the first instance may have had doubts as to whether they were capable of being leaders for others to follow. Time can be a great thing to help this situation. But , in the meantime here are my tips that I have learnt along the way.
1. Be a good Student
We should always be willing to learn. Find someone you admire and study them. The great NLP specialist Anthony Robbins teaches us to mirror those we admire.
It doesn’t matter how old we are, or how long we have left school. We should be learning continuously in order to grow .
The thing about being a student, is not only about learning, taking notes but also about taking action.
Ask good questions. The secret to learning, and being a good student is to ask good questions.
2. Read books on leadership
I could spout off percentages here but I won’t . We all know that successful people, top leaders and executives read books. On average the read 4 books a month.
I know personally I don’t have that time to read, but The reality is, we all have the same amount of time, it is how we choose to spend it. For me listening to audiobooks helps me to go through at least three books a month.
3. Have a mentor or coach
Even a mentor or a coach has a coach! We all need guidance, to be held accountable and to point us in the right directions when we go off track.
If you do not have a mentor, go find one. Look at those around you, if you find someone who inspires you, go ask them if they don’
t mind being your mentor.
There are lots of different types of coaches, so it is up to you to look for the right one. What area in your life are you looking at improving? There’s a coach for that!
4. Teach others what you Learn
In order for you to receive the value out of what you have learned you have to give it away by teaching others. So why not teach others what you have learned, pass on the knowledge and wisdom, and you will be amazed at how confident you become and very soon you will be looked upon as a source of information, a leader.
