Book Reviews

In order for me to change and my mindset to change I have had to travel along the road of self development.  Like many who become enlightened,if you want your life to change, then you have to change.

Here are just some of the books I have read which have changed various aspects of my life.

7 Habits of Highly Effective PeopleStephen Covey

This is a really insightful and thought provoking book. If you tend to procrastinate from time to time, then the tips in this book will ensure you never waste another ineffective moment.

The Long Walk to Freedom – An Autobiography of Nelson Mandela

I wanted to read ‘Long Road to Freedom’ to learn more about the man I admired from afar. I remember it was a Sunday afternoon 20 years agao when the news broke on the television, I was doing my Sunday Ironing and watching Nelson Mandela walk majestically from his prison was awesome. I felt a part of history..

It’s a long read to learn of Nelson Mandela’s road to freedom but well worth it. I learnt of the young boy who grew up in relative ignorance of the discriminatory regime under which he lived but who soaked up knowledge and eventually transformed into a dignified leader of all peoples who respected the human rights of others – irrespective of the colour of their skin.

Nelson Mandela cared not only for the dignity, respect and lives of his peoples, the oppressed, but also for the souls of the oppressors. The book ends with the line ‘..I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom comes responsilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.’ This book has motivated me to not give up.

Know Discover Your Strengths – Marcus Buckingham

This is a great interactive book, where you can also go online to do a brief test to find out what your strengths are. Marcus, looks at strengths and weaknesses in a totally new and exciting way. It is an eye opener, and a different way to look at things.

I discovered strengths I did not know I had.   This book has also helped me to discover how I can best use my strengths, but importantly where my weaknesses are the book talks you through using other peoples strengths that are your weaknesses.

My opinion – a great must read book, will get your thinking differently towards yourself and other people.

How To Have Your Best Year Ever – Jim Rohn

This is a fantastic audio book set. I have been going through the dvd’s in my car every day and have received so much inspiration from the teachings of master philosopher Jim Rohn. A must have to help change your mindset and give you a positive outcome for your future.

Who Moved My Cheese -Spencer Johnson

Not everyone likes change. Some take to it and adapt easily, others struggle. This book is great for helping to adapt to change, and the mindset needed to carry out change. Great personal development book giving some brilliant insights. It was easy to read and told in story format. Similar to the story of town mouse and country mouse.

How To Win Friends And Influence People- Dale Carnegie

The very first book that set me on the road to personal development, as a shy person, and one who did not network or know how to successfully, this book taught me how to gain confidence in myself and how to gain the confidence of others.

The Richest Man In Babylon – George S Clason

Another MUST read for any entrepreneur.  I loved reading this book, it is told as a set of parables, but it has very relevant meaning even today.  He talks simply about developing a habit of saving money to invest later on.  Although simple, most people do not seem to be able to grasp this concept.  If you are in debt or carry alot of debt then this is a MUST read for you. Very valuable lessons which have helped me in my business and something which you can pass on to your children to read.  Here is an excellent graduation gift for your child or grandchild.

The Twelve Pillars – Jim Rohn and Chris Widener

“Twelve Pillars” by Jim Rohn and Chris Widener will surely inspire you to take your life to the next level and beyond. It will challenge and encourage you to become the best that you can be. All you need to do is read it, learn from it, and take action on the twelve pillars of success.
I really enjoyed the story and I have already read this several times. It is such a quick read with so powerful a message, I’d encourage everyone to read it more than once. Let the lessons these two teach sink in and make sure you act upon them.

Seasons of Life – Jim Rohn

This is a great collection of peoms by Jim as ever inspirational. A great read and must have in any library.
